Carrefour is Europe’s largest retailer and the second largest globally, with more than 370,000 employees and 12,300 stores in 30 countries. In Italy alone, Carrefour operates 1,116 points of sale and carries out over 950 deliveries each day. The company’s Italian division aimed to reduce supply chain complexity by improving visibility and delivery efficiency across its transport network.
Carrefour Italy faced multiple challenges. The team lacked full visibility across the supply chain and did not have standardized processes in place. Reducing delivery costs without compromising service levels was a key goal, but insight into how the fleet could adapt to operational needs was limited.
To enhance transport efficiency, Carrefour needed better route planning and delivery timing. Accuracy in tracking was also essential. To meet these needs, they chose a combined toolset: ORTEC Routing and Dispatch, ORTEC Web Portals, and ORTEC’s Mobile App.
Our main challenge was to lower transport costs without impacting service levels. ORTEC proved that its optimization solution is all we needed to improve delivery efficiency.
“Our main challenge was to lower transport costs without impacting service levels,” said Matteo Gasparini, then Transportation Lead.
“ORTEC proved that its optimization solution is all we needed to improve delivery efficiency.”
ORTEC Routing and Dispatch unified planning and execution for Carrefour’s entire transport operations under a single framework. After implementation in several Italian warehouses, the system helped Carrefour strike a balance between fast planning and route optimization.
To enhance visibility, the Track & Trace module enabled full oversight of dispatching and execution. GPS data imported into the platform allowed planners to track vehicles in real-time, view planned vs. actual miles traveled, and receive alerts about route deviations or unauthorized stops.
“With Track & Trace, we can now monitor service levels in detail and follow each vehicle from planning to delivery,” Gasparini explained.

Productivity also improved with ORTEC Web Portals and the ORTEC Mobile App. The portals support collaboration across departments:
The mobile app captures execution data on the road, calculates ETAs, and triggers alerts if issues arise.
“We’ve driven strong change—from paper-based to system-based planning,” added Gasparini.
“With the ORTEC Mobile App, our drivers scan QR codes to confirm arrivals at delivery points.”
“We are very pleased with the results after implementing ORTEC Routing & Dispatch,” said Marco Mariotti, Transportation Manager at Carrefour Italy.
Thanks to ORTEC’s advanced route planning software and analytics, Carrefour Italy improved visibility, efficiency, and collaboration across its delivery operations. Vehicle utilization increased while total miles driven decreased—resulting in lower CO₂ emissions and reduced delivery costs.
“Planning is now significantly improved,” Mariotti added.
“The structure we’ve implemented is more transparent, adaptable to each distribution center and business unit. This has simplified our process flows and brought cost savings.”
